Glazing turns a balcony into a sheltered space, but it is the finishing that makes it cosy. Here is which materials suit a balcony in Alanya's warm, humid climate, what order to do the work in, and how to plan the lighting and furniture.
The glazing goes in first so that the finishes aren't damaged by rain and dust, and the installers can work freely on the slab and parapet. If you are planning insulated glazing and want to use the balcony in winter, bear this in mind when choosing the system — see the article frameless or sliding glazing.
It is important to decide in advance whether the balcony will be insulated or unheated, as this determines the finishing materials. An unheated balcony needs moisture- and frost-resistant finishes; for an insulated one you can use almost the same materials as indoors.
Don't leave the electrics until later: if the sockets and lighting points aren't done before the finishing, you will have to run cables on the surface or chase into walls that are already finished.
Balconies in Turkey usually already have porcelain stoneware or tiles — a practical option that isn't affected by moisture or temperature changes. If you want something warmer and cosier:
Laminate and parquet are not suitable for a balcony with cold glazing: they are sensitive to humidity.
Before laying new flooring, check the floor's slope: on an open balcony it falls towards the edge to drain water. After glazing this is no problem, but it is important that moisture doesn't collect under the decking. If the balcony is going to be insulated, you could consider levelling the floor and even electric underfloor heating.
Moisture-resistant materials suit a balcony: exterior or washable paint, decorative plaster, WPC panels or moisture-resistant decorative slats. Light shades make the space look bigger and heat up less in the sun. If the balcony faces south, plan protection against fading — blinds or roller blinds on the panels.
If there is an air-conditioning unit or pipework on the balcony, think about how to cover it neatly with a decorative box or screen while keeping access for servicing. This is one of the details that make a big difference to how the balcony looks.
Electrics are best left to the professionals who do turnkey apartment renovation: they will run the cables concealed and take the load into account.
If you use the balcony in the evening, warm light creates a cosier atmosphere than cool light. It is handy if the lighting can be dimmed — dimmers or smart bulbs work well for this.
On a balcony with cold glazing, choose furniture that isn't bothered by moisture or sun: aluminium, synthetic rattan, teak, outdoor textiles. For narrow balconies, folding tables, built-in benches with storage drawers and wall-mounted shelves work well.
If the balcony is an unusual shape, it makes sense to order made-to-measure furniture — that way every centimetre is used, and the space under the seats becomes storage.
Don't forget textiles: cushions, throws and outdoor rugs make a balcony cosier. Choose fade-resistant fabrics and store them in closed boxes if the balcony isn't fully glazed.
We handle glazing, screens, blinds and curtains, while the finishing of the balcony and apartment is done by our partner company Home Mix: floors, walls, electrics, furniture and design. That way you get a coordinated result without having to find several contractors.
If you are planning to renovate the whole apartment, it makes sense to include the balcony in the overall project so that the finishes, colours and furniture on the balcony match the interior of the room it opens onto.

We don't recommend it on a balcony with cold glazing: laminate doesn't cope with moisture and temperature changes. Tiles, WPC or, for insulated balconies, vinyl flooring are better.
Glazing and electrics first, then the floor and walls, and only then furniture and décor.
We handle glazing and sun protection, while the finishing is taken care of by our partner company Home Mix.
